Programs

  • Abilities Centre and the Royal Conservatory Partner to Launch Music Programs

    In partnership with the Royal Conservatory, Abilities Centre will be offering two new 6 week music classes: drumming and choir  The classes will give participants the opportunity to explore their own musical abilities and experience the joy of making music with others. The classes will be taught by trained artist-instructors from the Royal Conservatory’s Living through the Arts program. The introduction to drumming class, taught by Rufus Glassco, will take place Monday night from 7:30pm -8:30pm, beginning February 27th.  The Choir program taught by Carlie Howell, will take place on Wednesdays from 10:30am – 12:00pm, beginning March 28th. With the opening of the new Abilities Centre facility scheduled for early May, 2012, both of these programs will be hosted at another arts and culture landmark, the beautiful Station Gallery, in Whitby. The registration fee for each program is  $70.00.

The Abilities Centre will create an inclusive and integrated, internationally leading Centre of Excellence that enhances the quality of life and citizenship of persons of all ages and abilities through sports, arts and life skills programs, research and community capacity building. Some of the programs and services we are planning to offer include:


-Membership profiles and program matching services
-Internship and cooperative education opportunities
-Sponsored lecture series
-Seasonal day camps for kids
-Music, dance, drama and fine arts programs
-Theatre productions
-Court-based sports leagues: Basketball, Badminton, Volleyball etc.
-Mobility, pain and stress management classes
-Running and walking clinics
-Weight circuits and cardio programs
-Adult day programs
-Café volunteer and staffing opportunities

The Adult Social Club

The Adult Social Club (ASC) is an Abilities Centre Program sponsored by Scotiabank. The social and recreational program is offered to adults 18-35 years old with special needs who live in the Durham Region.

If you are interested in participating in the Adult Social Club please complete the Adult Social Club Participant Profile 2012 . After this date any space available will open up to anyone meeting the criteria who are interested in joining the Adult Social Club.

Membership lasts 4 months at a cost of $2 per month. Cheques should be made payable to “Abilities Centre” please.
